I’m a former teacher of German who has forgotten more than I ever knew! I set up this group in January 2023, in the hope that there might be others out there who would enjoy trying to speak the language, and the response so far has been great.

KAFFEETRINKEN is all about encouraging the speaking of German in a relaxed setting, over a cup of coffee (or tea) and cake! If you speak German, from a smattering you learned at school to native speaker level, come and join us! The aim is to have fun trying to communicate in the language and although there are no formal grammar lessons, we all help each other to get across what we are trying to say.

The class begins with some informal catch-up chat, then breaks into smaller groups to discuss some questions on a theme, which I send out in advance each month. You can do as much or as little preparation as you want! I try to have a teacher of German in each group, which is a great help to less experienced speakers of the language. We are also very lucky to have some native speakers who don’t mind getting their brains picked when we are stuck for a word - this happens a lot!
